There’s something of an irony here. According to Financial Times last week, Meta’s plans to
“build an AI data centre in the US that runs on nuclear power were thwarted in part because a rare species of bee was discovered on land earmarked for the project, according to people familiar with the matter… However, the potential deal faced multiple complications including environmental and regulatory challenges, these people said. The discovery of the rare bee species on a location next to the plant where the data centre was to be built would have complicated the project, Zuckerberg told a Meta all-hands meeting last week, according to two people familiar with the meeting.”
Seems like nature threw a monkey wrench into Meta’s climate program. While this might elicit a grin, there is serious message here – what contingency plans does your company have for achieving climate goals if something unexpected happens to Plan A? Or Plans B, C and D? In Meta’s case, this hurdle not only impacts them, but also their customers hoping for their own Scope 3 reductions from Meta’s plans. So now what?
