A developing plan from the new administration would threaten Scope 2 emissions reduction plans. According to Bloomberg, Energy Secretary Chris Wright said last week
“The Trump administration is working on a ‘market-based’ plan to stem the closure of US coal-fired power plants as it seeks to supply more electricity before an expected boom in demand from artificial intelligence…
‘We’ve got to not only grow new production, but we’ve got to stop digging the hole, which means stop shutting down existing, viable, economic plants.'”
The article states that “coal accounts for about 15% of power generation in the US today,” which is consistent with a bit of (non-exhaustive) research I did on my own. If the “market-based plan” to keep fossil-fuel power generation going moves ahead – and maybe reopens mothballed facilities – corporate Scope 2 emissions reductions will head in the wrong direction. But through no fault of the companies themselves.
