Last year, the EU conducted a “call for evidence” on the new EU framework for climate resilience. Now the Commission has released a summary report of its findings. The summary notes the following as primary themes of consultation responses:
“The overall sentiment showed a broad support for the initiative, with a recurring theme on the depth of EU legal obligations versus subsidiarity. The five most frequent priorities (mentioned in ≥60 % of the responses) were related to:
- Stable, predictable, long-term EU funding and blended-finance tools for adaptation.
- Harmonised risk-assessment standards with shared climate scenarios.
- ‘Resilience-by-design’ criteria for all public spending and procurement.
- Nature-based solutions as default first line of defence.
- Systematic integration of health, incl. heat-health, into all plans.”
These responses will help inform the EU’s approach to climate resilience and risk management. This includes a potential legislative framework. Respondents indicated that they would like to see climate resilience integrated into several sectors, including infrastructure, water management, and energy systems. The Commission will now take this feedback into consideration as it considers how to promote a more climate-resilient economy.
