The EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) entered into force last February, but yesterday marked the general application date for many new requirements. The law is designed to reduce packaging waste and increase the recyclability of packaging materials. While it’s no surprise that EU companies are preparing for compliance, the regulation is having impacts outside the EU economy. UK companies are also racing to comply with the PPWR, since the EU is their largest trading partner. PA Future reports:

“According to a new survey of 200 British businesses by Advanced Supply Chain, 93% of companies said they have been, or expect to be, affected by the incoming legislation. The research found 39% are currently making changes to their packaging, while a further 32% are reviewing and assessing their formats. Just 16% have already adapted their packaging to comply, while only 7% reported the new rules will have no impact on their operations.”

This is a great example of how sustainability laws can impact foreign economies. The EU hasn’t been shy about its intentions either. Between the Deforestation Regulation, Third-Country CSRD reporting, the CSDDD, and CBAM, the message is clear. If you want to do business in or with the EU, you must be willing to comply with their ESG directives. When major political powers adopt these laws, they ensure compliance beyond their borders. As more world powers and major economies move toward sustainability, laggards will be placed at a disadvantage. We’ll see how this trend continues and if the Packaging Waste Regulation is just the start.
